Shoreview, Minn. [February 7, 2017] – “Stop by our store to pick up chicks.” That’s a catchphrase you may hear across the country this spring. We’re talking about the chicks families have fallen in love with: baby chickens. These backyard birds – and how to start a flock – will be a central theme of local Purina
® Chick Days events, set for February through May nationwide.
Kristin Horvath, backyard flock associate marketing manager with Purina Animal Nutrition, explains that annual Purina
® Chick Days have become a mainstay on chicken enthusiasts’ calendars. Local retailers offer educational sessions, host family-friendly activities and walk through the steps of starting a flock.

“Backyard chickens are surging in popularity in both urban and rural communities,” Horvath says. “Spend some time with a backyard flock and there’s no surprise why. Chicks grow to produce farm fresh eggs, and they are easy to take care of. They’re friendly and funny and can quickly become a part of the family. Local Purina
® Chick Days are created to share forward this joy.”
Highlights of 2017 Purina
® Chick Days events include:
- Hands-on Education: Local experts are set to offer how-to tips that walk through the chicken raising journey - from the your first baby chick to your first egg happy dance. Many locations will also host in-depth seminars for experienced flock raisers.
- Family Fun: Along with the opportunity to see chicks firsthand, many Purina retailers host chicken-themed games and contests during their local Purina® Chick Days. Past activities have included: craft corners, coloring pages, crowing contests, chicken fashion shows and in-store scavenger hunts.
- Nationwide contest: Every chick is unique, but only one can be crowned “The cutest chick in America.” During Purina® Chick Days, Purina will host a nationwide photo contest on Purina Poultry Facebook to find the country’s most adorable chick. To enter, fans can simply visit their local event, snap a photo with their new bird/s and enter on Facebook. Entrants will then compete to win fun poultry prizes and a year’s supply of chicken feed.
